Great Barrier Island in New Zealand is paradise on earth, which has its own charm and I am extremely happy for the opportunity to visit this island. Undoubtedly, he fascinated me with his nature and beautiful beaches. I’ve been on this island in October 2018 for my 26th birthday.

LOCATION

Great Barrier Island is located in the outer bay of Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand, 100 kilometres north-east of central Auckland, separated from the Coromandel Peninsula (south) by Colville Channel. In addition, it is the sixth-largest island of New Zealand and fourth-largest in the main chain, with a total land area of 110 square miles (285 square km). Mount Hobson is the highest point at 627 meters (2,057 ft) above sea level.

The eastern shore of Great Barrier Island faces the ocean with high cliffs as well as long white surf beaches. The western side offers deep sheltered harbours and also calm sandy bays.

Interestingly enough, this island has been designated as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, furthermore, it has joined only ten other places in the world.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AT THE BARRIER ISLAND?

Without a doubt, take one of the many walking tracks and hiking trails through pristine native bush. From short walks to the multi-day Aotera Track not to mention one-hour walk for a dip in the natural hot pools at Kaitoke Hot Springs. Whichever, walks you choose, spectacular scenery as well as epic views are guaranteed. Soak up the scenery moreover feel the stress melt away.

 

Discover the island’s native wildlife, with not only excellent bird watching and snorkelling but also dive spots. Overall, the protected forest, clean waters and conservation efforts have allowed wildlife to thrive.

Swim, surf or kayak at the island’s spectacular beaches and bays, as well as the stunning Medlands Beach. Rent a fishing boat or another option, join a fishing tour to find the best fishing spots around the island.

HOW DO I GET FROM AUCKLAND TO THE GREAT BARRIER ISLAND?

You can get there by light plane a 35-minute flight or rather a 4 ½ hour passenger and car ferry trip.

Sealink operates regular vehicle also passenger ferries from Wynyard Quarter in the CBD to Tryphena Harbour. The journey takes 4.5 hours and if you’re lucky you might see dolphins as well as penguins on your way. Light plane flights also operate from Auckland (Fly My Sky or Barrier Air) and are only 35 minutes, plus you’ll get to enjoy spectacular views as you travel above the Hauraki Gulf.
